Journalism Toolbox

Not that long ago reporters might spend weeks searching through dusty file cabinets in government buildings searching for specific information.
Today, much of the same information can often be located in minutes by searching online. But knowing how to search can speed the process immeasurably. This site can be helpful for journalists in two areas:
1. Using a few simple techniques, you can find reliable information on Google or other search engines very quickly.
Below are two case studies involving actual news events and how focused searching helped add to the information very quickly, plus a primer on how those techniques might help you.
2. OSINT is the acronym for Open Source Intelligence, which is a field of online research practiced by everyone from journalists to employees of the CIA.
Most of the sites for journalists have a focus on international websites, which is of little use to most US reporters. As you will see, this website focuses on the best websites for domestic investigations.
